With more than 2,000 years of history, Trier is recognised as the oldest city in Germany – unlike many earlier settlements or military camps that, although demonstrably older, never received official city status. According to the founding legend, Trier was established some 1,300 years before Rome – thus as early as 2050 BC. An inscription on the Rotes Haus reads: “ANTE ROMAM TREVERIS STETIT ANNIS MILLE TRECENTIS. PERSTET ET AETERNA PACE FRUATUR” – translated as: “Before Rome, Trier stood for thirteen hundred years. May it continue to stand and enjoy eternal peace.”
However, as our detectives can attest from experience, peace has not always prevailed in the city. In addition to commercial offences, many of our clients are troubled by private concerns, and the investigation of criminal offences such as robbery, theft and burglary also plays a significant role. The commercial investigators and private detectives of Kurtz Detective Agency Trier are thoroughly familiar with the local conditions in the city and its surroundings. We are pleased to place our expertise and experience at your disposal for surveillance operations in Trier: +49 651 2094 0060.
In order to understand the composition of the population, the cultural circumstances and thus the particular characteristics of Trier, a basic knowledge of the city’s history is essential. Local expertise is one of the fundamental prerequisites for successful investigations by detectives. Below is a brief outline of the historical events that shaped Trier into what it is today:
From the mid-3rd century onwards, the city was known as “Treveris”. Over the centuries, one ruling power followed another: first the Romans; in the 3rd century Trier became an episcopal seat and thus fell under ecclesiastical authority; subsequently the Alemanni briefly took possession of the city; thereafter Roman rule returned until the Franks assumed control in the 8th century. At the beginning of the 10th century, Trier was assigned to East Francia. In the 13th century, the cathedral city regained independence through a charter granted by Emperor Otto IV, only to be incorporated once again under the authority of the archbishop in the 14th century.
During the Thirty Years’ War, Trier was first conquered by the Spaniards and then by the French, freeing itself from French occupation only in 1675. Until 1705 the French made repeated attempts to seize the city, finally succeeding in 1794. During the occupation, monasteries, collegiate foundations and numerous other buildings were demolished. In the course of the Wars of Liberation, the cathedral city was taken by the Prussians in 1814 and remained under their control until the First World War. During this period, city walls and gates were removed, with only the parade ground preserved. From 1918 to 1930, following the withdrawal of Prussian troops, Trier was again under French occupation. In 1944 the first Allied bombs fell on the city; more than 1,600 houses were destroyed and 420 people lost their lives. Since 1946, Trier has belonged to the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, although it remained under French occupation until the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany.
In light of this eventful history and Trier’s location in the heart of Europe, in close proximity to several neighbouring countries, the multicultural and multilingual character of the city and region is hardly surprising. Both investigative research and surveillance operations by private detectives in Trier often require a thorough understanding of these particularities in order to be successful. Kurtz Investigations Trier and Luxembourg believes it meets these standards. Allow us to convince you: kontakt@kurtz-detektei-luxemburg.com.
